General contractors & design-build firms

IT Services for General Contractors in Colorado

You open a new office every time you win a job.

A trailer in Pueblo. A school addition in Castle Rock. A hangar on base. Every site needs connectivity, security, and access that works on day one and shuts off completely the day the job closes. Stepping Forward Technology gives general contractors one standard way to run every site, protection for the money moving between them, and a clear path to the federal work growing across Colorado.

The quiet losses between the office and the job site

Building from yesterday's drawings.

The VPN drops in the trailer, so the superintendent works from the set he downloaded last week. Nobody logs the lost hour or the drive back to the office. Sometimes nobody catches the revision either, until it becomes rework.

Every site set up a little differently.

Whoever was available configured the network at each job. Nobody can say for certain what is running at the Grand Junction site, and the equipment at the site that closed in the spring may still be online.

The software pile.

Project management, estimating, accounting, plan sharing, scheduling, field apps, and a few subscriptions someone started on one project and never cancelled. Every tool is another login, another bill, and another place your data lives.

Access that outlives the job.

Subcontractors, owner's reps, and seasonal hires who still have logins months after closeout. Nobody meant to leave the door open. Nobody was assigned to close it.

You move money on a schedule criminals can predict.

General contractors move large sums on a calendar: draws, progress payments, subcontractor payments, retainage. That makes construction a natural target for payment fraud. The most common version is not a dramatic hack. It is a polite email that looks exactly like your concrete sub or your supplier, asking to update their bank details before the next payment goes out.

It works because it looks like ordinary business. Stopping it takes two things working together: layered protection that catches most of these emails before anyone sees them, and one simple business rule that stops the rest. No banking change is ever accepted by email alone.

Stabilize

Remote-first support reaches your people wherever they are working, and our proactive team works from a written standard refined every week since 2016, so problems surface before your superintendents notice them.

Onboarding and offboarding run as time-bound workflows, which matters when your headcount rises and falls with the season.

And because we do not charge per device for network gear, adding firewalls and access points to a new trailer does not add line items to your bill.

Protect

We assume no defense stops every threat, so we build for fast detection and response: layered email protection, MFA, endpoint protection verified healthy on every device, security training with simulated phishing, and a 24/7 security operations capability that keeps watching after your office closes.

Security strategy is owned in-house by our full-time Chief Information Security Officer, who holds a Masters in Cybersecurity and is a Certified Ethical Hacker.

Empower

A founder-led technology roadmap tied to your backlog and your bid pipeline: consolidating the software pile into a stack your team actually uses, planning field-device replacement before it becomes downtime, and preparing the business for federal work before a solicitation requires it.

One standard way to run every site, protection for the money moving between them, and a clear path to federal work across Colorado.

Federal work and CMMC: what is actually required

Colorado Springs is ringed by military installations, and federal projects are a real growth opportunity for contractors who are ready for them. Winning more of that work increasingly depends on cybersecurity. Defense contracts that involve Federal Contract Information or Controlled Unclassified Information carry CMMC requirements, and prime contractors check their subcontractors' status before sharing that information.

The program is also changing, which is exactly why you need a partner who tracks it closely and tells you the truth about it. Here is what does not change: the security controls behind CMMC and the evidence that proves them. Today, a current self-assessment score is already a condition of award on applicable defense contracts.

We build those controls into daily operations, prepare the evidence, and tell you plainly what your next contract will require.

Proof: a Sunday morning at Nunn Construction

Nunn Construction builds large commercial and institutional projects across the Front Range. Early one Sunday morning, with the company president traveling out of state, our security operations team detected abnormal activity coming from his account: an attacker's first attempt to gain high-level access to the network. Our team isolated the machine, halted the attack before any damage, and then reimaged it completely. Zero downtime. No data breach.

The attacker used a legitimate account. Detection and fast response stopped it at the first step. That is what building for the breach you cannot prevent looks like in practice.

Read the Nunn Construction case study

“The fact that Stepping Forward Technology could detect, respond, and resolve an attempted breach so quickly, and on a weekend no less, proves we made the right choice in partnering with them. Exceptional work!”

Why general contractors across Colorado choose Stepping Forward

Your footprint is the whole state. Your IT partner should be built for that. We have served Colorado businesses from Colorado Springs for 20 years, with support designed to reach every site, not just the office.

We also answer the talent problem most contractors cannot solve alone. Senior IT and security leaders command coastal salaries, and a contractor your size cannot justify the seat. Our structure closes the gap: a founder-led fractional CIO and a full-time, in-house CISO, so a mid-sized contractor gets executive-level technology and security leadership it could never hire for itself.

Who this is for

We work best with general contractors and design-build firms from 15 to 500+ employees, with our sweet spot between 50 and 150: firms running multiple active job sites across Colorado, pursuing or already performing federal work, or tired of rebuilding their technology every time they mobilize. If you have internal IT, our co-managed model supplies the security layer and the multi-site standard alongside your team.

Frequently asked questions

Does CMMC apply to general contractors?

If you perform defense work that involves Federal Contract Information or Controlled Unclassified Information, yes, and the requirements flow down to your subcontractors. The level you need depends on the information in the contract. Our CMMC compliance page explains the levels, and a short conversation can usually place you.

Didn't the Department of Defense pause CMMC?

It paused one part of it. In July 2026, the Department suspended the phase that would have required third-party certification for many contracts while it reviews the program. Self-assessment requirements, the scores contracting officers check before award, and the underlying safeguarding rules remain in force. Every likely outcome of the review still requires the same security controls, which is why the preparation is worth doing now.

How do you protect us from payment fraud and fake invoices?

In layers, and honestly. Email protection and MFA stop most impersonation attempts before they reach anyone, training and simulated phishing teach your team to recognize the rest, and 24/7 monitoring watches for compromised accounts. No tool catches every convincing email, so we also help you adopt one business rule: banking changes are verified by phone at a known number, never by email alone. That rule is what actually stops the wire.

What does IT for a general contractor cost?

An all-inclusive monthly fee priced per user, with no per-device charges for network gear like firewalls, switches, and access points. For a contractor adding equipment at every new site, that difference adds up. Project work, like a new office build-out, is quoted and approved before it begins. Our pricing page publishes ranges and what drives them.

Can you support crews working all over the state?

Yes. Support is remote-first, so a superintendent in Durango gets the same engineer-first help as someone at your main office.

Your next job site is coming.

Make it the easiest one you have ever opened.
